De Rolex Fastnet Race had al na 10 dagen het maximum van 300 ingeschreven jachten. Ondertussen staan er nog ruim 130 jachten op de wachtijst. Daarom besloot de Royal Ocean Racing Club om de professionele klassen uit de 300 deelnemers te halen. De Volvo Ocean 70, Imoca 60, Class 40 en Multihulls, die hun eigen klasse varen, zullen buiten de 300 andere IRC jachten gerekend worden. Zo onstaan er een 50 tal extra plaatsen in de IRC.
